Learning a modern foreign language helps pupils develop their interest in the similarities and differences between themselves and others. This includes broadening their understanding of other countries, communities, cultures and peoples. Learning the basics of a foreign language also helps pupils develop their language and communication skills and can enhance self-esteem.
MFL(French) is taught at Key Stage Two, through 12 units from the Framework for Languages, with a strong focus on speaking and listening. Teachers use a variety of techniques to actively engage pupils in learning including games, role play and action songs. A physical element is used in some games, rhymes and songs to reinforce memory.
Teachers try to make lessons as enjoyable as possible so that children develop a positive attitude to the learning of MFL. MFL is most successful if taught for small amounts of time every day rather than a full lesson once a week and wherever possible, this is what we aim to do.
